New Beginnings: A New Paper, A New Year, and 150 Years of Loveland

Updated: Jan 11

By Mike Meldon

New beginnings have a way of arriving all at once.

As we step into a new year filled with renewed hope, fresh leadership, and reflection, Loveland is also marking a milestone worth celebrating: the 150th anniversary of our city’s founding. It is a moment that invites us to look forward with optimism while also honoring the paths that brought us here.

It is in that spirit that we introduce The Loveland Daily.

This newspaper is a new beginning for us as founders, but more importantly, it is meant to be a renewed beginning for local journalism in Loveland—a city that has grown, changed, and evolved in remarkable ways over the past century and a half.

Honoring the Past While Reporting the Present

Throughout 2026, Loveland will commemorate its sesquicentennial through city events, community gatherings, and historical reflections. We are proud to be part of that celebration.

Over the coming year, The Loveland Daily will publish stories that explore Loveland’s history—its people, neighborhoods, businesses, and defining moments. In addition to written reporting, we are developing a documentary that will examine the many layers of Loveland’s past and how they continue to shape our present.

Our companion project, The Loveland Weekly Podcast, is also partnering with Gina Dubell-Smith and her eXp Designed2Sell Team on a special series titled “Land as Legacy.” This project explores how land ownership, development, and preservation in Loveland have influenced who we are as a community—and where we are headed.

These efforts are rooted in a simple belief: you cannot fully understand where you’re going unless you understand where you’ve been.

A City in Transition

This year also brings change to City Hall, with a newly seated city council that includes three new members and a fresh outlook on the future. Like every transition, it comes with questions, challenges, and opportunities—and it deserves careful, consistent, and fair reporting.

Loveland has changed dramatically over the past 150 years. Most would agree those changes have made our city stronger, more vibrant, and more connected. Our role is to report on what is new while never losing sight of what came before.

Why This Paper Exists

To understand why The Loveland Daily exists, you have to look back just a little.

For many years, Loveland Magazine was a trusted source of local news and storytelling. Following the passing of its founder, Dave Miller, last spring, many residents felt a noticeable absence in Loveland’s news culture. While podcasts and smaller publications continued to tell important stories—and still do—there was a sense that something larger was missing.

We want to pause here to recognize Dave Miller and the lasting impact he had on this city. His work helped make Loveland a better place, and his dedication to telling local stories set a standard that continues to inspire.

After his passing, we were asked a question more than once: Who is going to fill that gap?

At first, none of us had an answer. And honestly, none of us wanted to take on that responsibility alone.

But conversations began. Ideas followed. Circumstances shifted. What started as a possibility slowly became a commitment.

In my own case, this opportunity would not have been possible had I remained in my former role at Love Our Land, an organization I helped found. As that organization evolved, I realized it was time for me to pass the torch—without knowing then that it would open the door for something entirely new.

A team began to form. Some people joined and later stepped away. Others came on board as the vision became clearer. Eventually, a core group emerged, united by a shared belief that Loveland deserves a strong, independent, local news source. We decided to plant a new seed—one that grew out of The Loveland Weekly Podcast and into what is now The Loveland Daily.

The last few months have moved quickly. We’ve put in long hours, had difficult conversations, and made deliberate choices to bring us to today—our official launch.

Are we finished? No. Do we need contributors and sponsors? Absolutely. But new beginnings rarely arrive fully formed.

What We Believe

We believe Loveland deserves a news source that is clear, fair, and grounded in truth.

This publication exists for one simple reason: to inform our community honestly and thoughtfully—without spin, sensationalism, or hidden agendas.

In an era when headlines are designed to divide or distract, we believe local journalism should do the opposite. It should bring clarity. It should explain not just what is happening in our city, but why it matters—and how it affects the people who call Loveland home.

Our commitment is to the facts. We will take reasonable steps to verify information through public records, firsthand reporting, and clearly identified sources. When we make mistakes, we will correct them. We will clearly separate opinion from reporting. And most importantly, we will listen—to residents, business owners, city leaders, and neighbors whose voices are too often overlooked.

This paper exists to serve Loveland, not to speak over it.

You won’t always agree with everything you read here—and that’s okay. Our promise is to report honestly, with care, and with respect for this community.

An Invitation

As Loveland enters its 150th year—and as we begin this new chapter—we invite you to be part of the journey.

Read closely. Ask questions. Share your perspective. Contribute, sponsor, or simply stay informed.

Together, we can honor Loveland’s past, report its present, and help shape its future.
