The Timeless Joy of a Snow Day

A big snowfall like the one we are living through right now creates plenty of work and headaches for many in the community. But looking through a different lens, there are really few experiences so timeless and so joyful as a good snow day!

Maybe it’s the rarity, since it’s only a few times a year we get enough snow to go sledding or get a day off school and work. Maybe it’s the timeless fun of heading downhill on a sled or building a snowman or snow fort.

I can think of few childhood activities that have remained so pure and unchanged through the decades. Sleds today look very much like they did 50 years ago. No WiFi or electronics needed. This activity is fueled by human energy, fresh air and hot chocolate!

And for us adults… once you locate all the snow gear – boots, hats, gloves, sleds, etc., there is a special joy in watching your kids head outside to enjoy the winter wonderland in much the same way you did as a child. And, honestly, isn’t it nice to have a day or two in which you can’t go anywhere? To be gifted with a brief window of time when the rat race stops and your and your kids’ lives get really simple?

As you brace against the cold, snow shovel and salt bucket in hand, I hope you also feel in your soul the joy and warmth that come with the simple pleasure of a good snow day!
