Why Is It So Cold Early This Week — and Why It Will Warm Up Quickly

Residents waking up to winter-like temperatures in Loveland on Monday may be wondering what happened to spring. The answer lies in a quick shift in weather patterns across the Midwest — one that will bring a dramatic warm-up later this week.
A Shot of Cold Canadian Air
The cold start to the week is the result of a cold air mass moving south from Canada behind a passing weather system. As a cold front swept through the region over the weekend, it pulled colder air into southwest Ohio.
That cold air is being reinforced by strong northwest winds, which are helping keep temperatures well below what many people expect in mid-March. Wind also makes the air feel colder than the thermometer suggests.
Early in the week, temperatures in the Loveland area are struggling to climb much above the upper 20s to mid-30s, with occasional clouds and even saw some snow, thankfully it did not collect on the roads and driveways.
Why the Warm-Up Happens So Fast
Despite the chilly start, the pattern will change quickly as the week progresses.
By Wednesday, winds will shift from the northwest to the south and southwest, allowing warmer air from the southern United States to move into Ohio. Meteorologists call this “warm air advection,” and it can cause temperatures to rise rapidly. Loveland will go from mid 20 degrees to the low 70s for the weekend.
From Winter to Spring in a Few Days
The result is a dramatic swing:
Early week: temperatures in the 20s and 30s
Midweek: climbing into the 40s and 50s
Late week: potentially reaching the upper 60s or even low 70s
That type of temperature swing is very typical for March in Loveland, when the atmosphere is often battling between lingering winter air masses and incoming spring warmth.
A Reminder of Loveland's Changeable Spring
We have all seen this before, three season weather in one week. While the cold start may feel like a step backward, it’s a normal part of the transition from winter to spring in Loveland. Large temperature swings can occur when cold northern air masses collide with warmer southern air.
For Loveland residents, the takeaway is simple: bundle up early this week, but don’t put away the spring jackets just yet — warmer weather is right around the corner.
