According to the bill, the Frogman is described as “a frog-like, bipedal creature standing approximately four feet tall,” a nod to the long-standing folklore rooted right here in Loveland. The legislation highlights the cultural and economic impact of the legend, noting that the Frogman has inspired books, documentaries, festivals, artwork, merchandise, and tourism—all contributing to the local economy.
While Ohio has no official state cryptid currently, the proposal reflects a growing trend across the country of recognizing regional folklore as part of a state’s cultural identity. If passed, the designation would place the Loveland Frogman alongside other state symbols that celebrate Ohio’s history, wildlife, and heritage.
The Frogman legend dates back decades, with reported sightings along the Little Miami River as early as the 1950s. Over time, the story has evolved into a defining piece of Loveland’s identity—blending mystery, humor, and community pride.

At The Loveland Daily, we’re big fans of the Loveland Frogman and the sense of community he represents—that’s why he’s featured in both our main logo and The Loveland Weekly Podcast. He represents something deeper than folklore: a shared story that makes Loveland feel a little more connected, a little more creative, and a lot more unique.

And on a personal note, the Frogman’s story has always held a special meaning for me. Years ago, I wrote a children’s book inspired by the legend, featuring familiar Loveland locations. It was my way of bringing the tale to life for younger readers—offering my own interpretation of why the Frogman exists and the role he plays in our community.
Since then, I’ve always looked for ways to further weave the Frogman into Loveland’s culture and events. In fact, I even worked with the city years ago to introduce a Frogman mascot that could appear at local festivals and parades.
Whether you believe in the legend or just enjoy the fun it brings, House Bill 821 is already doing something important: shining a spotlight on Loveland and celebrating one of its most beloved traditions.
We’re excited to see where the bill goes—and even more excited about the energy and pride it continues to spark in our community.
