A Great Start to the Loveland Shorts Film Festival

My wife and I had the opportunity to attend the kickoff event for the Loveland Shorts Film Festival Thursday evening, and we left even more excited for what this weekend has to offer.
The evening began at the Loveland Stage Company with two silent film classics—The Immigrant starring Charlie Chaplin and Sailors Beware featuring Laurel & Hardy—accompanied live on piano by Ian McCullough.
Like many people, I’d seen short clips from silent films over the years, but I don’t think I’d ever actually sat down and watched complete silent films- definitely not in a theater with a live piano player setting the scenes. It was a great experience.
What struck me most was just how funny they still are. The entire audience was laughing out loud throughout both films, and it was easy to appreciate the incredible talent and storytelling that made these classics timeless. It also showed me how much fun, creativity and storytelling can be put into a short film.

After the screenings, everyone gathered across the street for an after-party at Rose’s Boutique & Wine Bar. It was a wonderful opportunity to mingle with filmmakers, organizers, volunteers, and fellow movie lovers. More than anything, the excitement in the room was contagious. You could tell everyone involved genuinely believes in what this festival brings to Loveland.
One of the best things about the Loveland Shorts Film Festival is how flexible it is. The festival runs throughout the weekend, so you don’t have to commit to an entire day. Stop by for a few film blocks, attend one of the filmmaker workshops, bring the kids to the family-friendly screenings, or, if you’re a VIP pass holder, enjoy access to even more events and opportunities. You can truly make the weekend your own.
Events like this help make Loveland special. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who worked so hard to bring this festival—and these talented filmmakers—to our community.
If you’re looking for something fun, unique, and inspiring this weekend, I highly recommend grabbing a ticket. Whether you can spend a couple of hours or the entire weekend, I think you’ll be glad you did.
