“‘Loveland to Look At’: How a ’90s Sitcom Gave Our Town a Primetime Shout-out”

When The New WKRP in Cincinnati hit TV screens in the early ’90s, the reboot of the classic sitcom added a few new faces to the newsroom — and one of them carried a name that caught our attention right here in Ohio: Mona Loveland.

Played by actress Tawny Kitaen, Mona Loveland was the station’s confident, camera‑friendly DJ — a modern twist for a show that had been a staple of late‑’70s television.

Her character’s last name wasn’t chosen by accident. Writers of The New WKRP, set in Cincinnati, wanted local‑sounding names that reflected real places in the metro area. And just up the road sits Loveland, Ohio, whose name perfectly blended small‑town charm with a touch of romantic flair.

But the Loveland connection didn’t stop there. One episode was even titled “Loveland to Look At”, a playful nod that made the reference official. Broadcast nationally during the show’s run from 1991 to 1993, the episode reinforced the city’s name as part of the WKRP universe — a subtle inside joke for anyone familiar with the Cincinnati suburbs.

While Loveland, Ohio never actually appeared on screen, it became part of the show’s cultural DNA. For a town best known today for its scenic riverfront and castle, getting name‑checked in a prime‑time network sitcom was a charming pop‑culture cameo — one that literally put Loveland in lights.
