For parents of children on the autism spectrum, finding meaningful supports can be extraordinarily challenging. Barriers abound—limited government funding, transportation difficulties, endless time constraints, inconsistent service quality, shortages of adequately trained staff, and an education system perpetually forced to do more with less, to name just a few. Understandably and appropriately, most services are designed to support the individual on the spectrum. Yet very little is intentionally designed to support the parents or primary caregivers themselves.
Galperin Autism Consulting, based just outside Loveland, is working to change that. Through telehealth counseling and consultation, we focus specifically on supporting parents navigating the emotional, mental, and practical realities of raising a child on the autism spectrum.
After nearly 25 years in the autism and developmental disability field—working across employment supports, home and community services, behavioral crisis units, parent training and education, and school-based mental and behavioral health—I founded Galperin Autism Consulting to fill a critical gap. While we provide counseling for autistic teens and adults, a central part of our work is supporting parents as they cope with the unique stresses of autism parenting. Financial strain, marital stress, chronic exhaustion, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression, and social isolation are just some of the challenges we help parents address.
In addition to counseling, we offer consultation on evidence-based strategies and methodologies aimed at improving a child’s functioning and independence. As many parents discover, these improvements often have a positive ripple effect—reducing caregiver stress and easing symptoms such as anxiety and depression.
Parents who work with us frequently report that the most meaningful difference between Galperin Autism Consulting and other mental health providers, even excellent ones, is our deep understanding of autism and the complex systems surrounding it. They value being able to speak openly about their experiences without spending much of their session educating the therapist about their child or the system. Instead, they can focus fully on themselves.
